Conserving Resources

In addition to sustaining the global fisheries from which we source, is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations, packaging, and supply chain of our products.

Reducing our Operational Environmental Footprint

In 2009, we established a baseline of key environmental metrics that helped quantify the environmental impact of our plant and facility operations. The baseline for energy consumption, Greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste sent to a landfill served as the starting point from which we developed long-term reduction goals.

Using 2009 as a baseline, we set goals to reduce by 2015 energy and greenhouse gas emissions by 15%, water use by 20% and waste to landfill by 15% on a per production unit basis.  We reported that we met all four of those 2015 goals!

We have now set a second round of new targets where we are seeking to reduce our key usage metrics by an additional 5% off the 2015 baseline levels by 2020.  Because of the significant reductions reached on our initial set of goals, these new ones will be challenging.

Click here to see our progress against our newly established goals:

  • Energy and Greenhouse Gas emissions – 5%
  • Water – 5%
  • Waste to landfill – 5%

The measurement and goal setting process will bolster and continue to drive past efforts in the area of resource conservation. Past and ongoing efforts and projects include lighting retrofits, boiler efficiency improvements, high efficiency air compressor installation, water reuse/conservation projects, energy efficient roof installations, and expanded recycling programs.

Working with our Supply Chain

We understand that our suppliers and the movement of our products through the supply chain are key components to our overall sustainability program. Our logistics group maximizes truck and container loads, utilizes inter-modal transportation where possible and partners with our customers for direct-from-plant deliveries, customer pickup and fixed day delivery schedules to minimize trucks on the road. Reflective of our commitment to sustainability and moving goods efficiently, in 2014, Bumble Bee joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® logo_smart_way  Transport Partnership.  Through the Partnership we are committed to shipping more of our goods via efficient SmartWay carriers, continuing to improve our operational efficiency and reporting freight activity annually. We are proud to join over 3,000 Partners and contribute to the Partnership’s savings of 120.7 million barrels of oil, and 51.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road. Please click here to learn more about how we are working with our supply chain to reduce our environmental footprint.

As a consumer goods company, we realize that packaging comprises a component of our product’s footprint, a component that is visible to the consumer after they have enjoyed our products. Our objective is to design and source primary and secondary packaging which minimizes environmental impact throughout the life cycle, while ensuring the safety and quality of our products, durability in our customer supply chains, effective shelf presence, and convenience of use to our consumers. A note from our CEO about COVID-19x
Bumble Bee Seafood Logo

The coronavirus has changed life, as we knew it, forever. Most people will be touched in some way by the pandemic either physically, emotionally or financially. We’ve all heard heart-breaking stories from around the world about lives that have been lost and severe financial hardships caused by the sudden shutdown of so many businesses.

On behalf of all our team members around the globe, we extend our deepest sympathies to all that are struggling through personal challenges, whatever they may be, and we offer our sincerest gratitude to all the heroes who are helping those in need.

We’d also like to add how important it is for everyone to continue to do their part to slow the spread. Physical distancing is critical, and we must all take this seriously. We use the word “physical” because staying away from people in a physical way does not mean we should be neglecting the importance of social interactions, compassion and patience.

We are one of the largest providers of shelf-stable seafood and it is our honor and our responsibility to do our part, in every way we can, to help to keep people fed with affordable, nutritious protein. To that end, we’re continuing to run our factories in the US and Canada while our partners around the world continue to provide supply.

We take great pride in being a “people-first” company, so our decision to continue operations is done with utmost concern for the people making it possible. We’ve enhanced our safety measures to meet or exceed CDC guidelines and we have increased wages in our factories to assist employees dealing with the incremental costs of working and new, unexpected demands on their households.

We also take great pride in producing healthy, nutritious and safe products for our customers. Please know the manufacturing practices we follow year-round protect our both employees and the products they produce. Our facilities have very few people-to-product interactions, all products are sterilized in a high temperature oven and then packaged in highly automated production lines.

Beyond Bumble Bee, we’re continually looking for ways to extend our “people first” approach to make a meaningful impact. With so many people in need, we know this effort is more important than ever. We’re starting by donating more than $1 million in product to food banks in both the US and in Canada. And we will be looking for more opportunities to make a positive difference in the days to come.

Finally, I want to thank you, our loyal and new customers, for your support. We hope you find the recipes on our website helpful and easy to prepare. I also want to send a sincere thank you to our Bumble Bee Team and our valued supply partners around the world for their tireless efforts, particularly those working in sales, manufacturing, distribution and all our support roles, ensuring we can keep store and pantry shelves stocked.

Please continue to do your part to keep yourselves and your families safe during this truly unprecedented time.

With Gratitude,
CEO, Bumble Bee Seafoods
