In addition to sustaining the global fisheries from which we source, is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations, packaging, and supply chain of our products.
Reducing our Operational Environmental Footprint
In 2009, established a baseline of key environmental metrics that helped quantify the environmental impact of our plant and facility operations. The baseline for energy consumption, Greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and waste sent to landfill served as the starting point from which we developed long-term reduction goals.
Using 2009 as a baseline, we set goals to reduce by 2015 energy and greenhouse gas emissions by 15%, water use by 20% and waste to landfill by 15% on a per production unit basis. We reported last year that we met all four of those 2015 goals!
We have now set a second round of new targets where we are seeking to reduce our key usage metrics by an additional 5% off the 2015 baseline levels by 2020. Because of the significant reductions reached on our initial set of goals, these new ones will be challenging.

- Waste to landfill – 5%
The measurement and goal setting process will bolster and continue to drive past efforts in the area of resource conservation. Past and ongoing efforts and projects include lighting retrofits, boiler efficiency improvements, high efficiency air compressor installation, water reuse/conservation projects, energy efficient roof installations, and expanded recycling programs.
Working with our Supply Chain
We understand that our suppliers and the movement or our products through the supply chain are a key component of our overall sustainability program. Our logistics group maximizes truck and container loads, utilizes inter-modal transportation where possible and partners with our customers for direct from plant deliveries, customer pickup and fixed day delivery schedules to minimize trucks on the road. Reflective of our commitment to sustainability and moving goods efficiently, in 2014, Bumble Bee joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay® Transport Partnership. Through the Partnership we are committed to shipping more of our goods via efficient SmartWay carriers, continuing to improve our operational efficiency and reporting freight activity annually. We are proud to join over 3,000 Partners and contribute to the Partnership’s savings of 120.7 million barrels of oil, and 51.6 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of taking 10 million cars off the road.
