In addition to sustaining the global fisheries from which we source, Bumble Bee is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations, packaging, and supply chain of our products.
Reducing our Operational Environmental Footprint
In 2009, Bumble Bee established a baseline of key environmental metrics which helped quantify the environmental impact of our plant and facility operations. The baseline for energy consumption, Greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption and solid waste generation served as the starting point from which we developed long term reduction goals and against which we measure progress in these key areas.
Using 2009 as a baseline, we have established the following per production unit reduction goals to be achieved by 2015. Click here to see our progress against our goals:
- Energy and Greenhouse Gas emissions-15%
- Waste to landfill-15%
The measurement and goal setting process will bolster and continue to drive past efforts in the area of resource conservation. Past and ongoing efforts and projects include lighting retrofits, boiler efficiency improvements, high efficiency air compressor installation, water reuse/conservation projects, energy efficient roof installations, and expanded recycling programs.
Bumble Bee Packaging
As a consumer goods company, we realize that packaging comprises a component of our product’s footprint, a component that is visible to the consumer after they have enjoyed our products. To that end, our objective is to design and source primary and secondary packaging which minimizes environmental impact throughout the life cycle while ensuring the safety and quality of our products, durability in our customer supply chains, effective shelf presence, and convenience of use to our consumers. Working with our Supply Chain
We understand that our suppliers and the movement or our products through the supply chain are a key component of our overall sustainability program. Our logistics groups strive to maximize truck and container loads, utilize inter-modal transportation where possible and partner with our customers for direct from plant deliveries, customer pickup and fixed day delivery schedules to minimize trucks on the road.
