How to Keep Your Immune System Up While Working Out in the Cold

Along with winter comes cold and flu season, which can really put a damper on your holidays. Plus, the cold, wet weather outside doesn’t seem to help things. If you continually get sick each winter, you’re probably envious of those who don’t get sick at all.  However, there are simple steps you can take to ensure that you don’t get sick, even when you’re working out in the cold, wet weather outside.

Why You Get Sick

There is a common myth that being cold and wet alone causes you to get sick.  But, in fact, this is not true. We are exposed to cold and flu germs everyday, and our immune systems respond to them every second. However, sometimes your body just can’t fight the germs off, because you’ve done something to compromise it. Here are some tricks to keep your immune system in top shape, to help you fight off the cold!

Eat the Right Foods

First, you need to continue to eat the right foods this holiday season, and not just gorge yourself on turkey and stuffing. Try to eat antioxidant rich foods, including fruits and vegetables, to keep your immune system healthy. If you aren’t taking a multivitamin, right now is a good time to start, because many grocers may not have a wide variety of fresh fruits in stock during winter. And getting enough Calcium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D are key to warding off the flu.

Stay Fit

Next, you need to stay fit during the holidays. Research has proven that regular exercise keep your natural antibodies at a good level to ward off disease. In fact, people who exercise are about 50% less likely to catch a cold compared to those who don’t exercise.


Finally, you need to relax and keep stress away. If you’re stressed, your body has a hard time fighting infections like the flu. So, make sure you’re getting enough sleep and try to keep stress to a minimum to stay healthy.
