Let’s face it: sitting at our desks all day isn’t doing our bodies any favors. While I definitely encourage you to get up and get moving as much as possible throughout the day, there are times when leaving your office space for more than a few minutes isn’t an option. To keep yourself feeling focused and energized while stuck at your desk, try to take frequent stretch breaks. Seated stretches are perfect for those of us who are confined to an office or cubicle for large chunks of the day, but feel free to use them no matter where you are.
Ideally, before you complete any type of stretching, you should get your muscles warm. A quick walk down the hall to grab some water or to run an office errand should do the trick. Head back to your desk and perform each of these stretches, holding the position for about twenty to thirty seconds before moving to the next stretch.
You’re probably wondering if random stretching is really all that important. If I’ve learned anything about fitness in recent years, it’s that it’s not an all-or-nothing game. Little efforts truly count toward your goals and any movement is better than none at all. On the days that I make an effort to move a little bit, I end up gaining the energy I need to move a whole lot more. Try it out for yourself and let us know how it goes!
