Cardio Alternatives to Running
Let’s face it: you can’t always head out on a run. Sometimes it’s because of weather, sometimes it’s because of a hectic schedule, and sometimes it’s because you just flat out don’t want to do it. No matter what your reason is for skipping a run, there are many awesome options for getting your heart rate up, getting your sweat on, and burning a few calories while you’re at it. HIIT, or high intensity interval training, is a type of training in which you alternate between periods of maximum effort and periods of recovery. It also just so happens to be one of the quickest and most efficient replacements to traditional cardio.
TAKE A DIP
If you need a fun, low-impact workout, look no further than the local pool. Water workouts are a great choice for people of all ages and ability levels, thanks to the buoyancy and consistent resistance water provides.
You’re never too old to play a game of pick up. Team sports are a throwback to a time in life when fitness was almost effortless. Grab a few friends and get in shape while you run around like crazy.
If you have a favorite machine, hop on it. The rower, elliptical, and stationary bike are the most popular machines when it comes to avoiding the treadmill. Whatever you choose, make sure to throw some intervals in for good measure.
If it’s not raining, head outside for something other than a run. Hike if you’re able or surf if you can; just get out there and get moving. While you’re at it, pack a picnic and make a day of it. Your workout just became an adventure.
