Now that summer break is coming to an end, kids will be heading back to school and parents will be wondering just how to get it all done. With the school year comes the added stress of drop-offs and pick-ups, homework and extracurricular activities, and just about a million other daily tasks. It’s easy to get bogged down! Just don’t forget to make exercise a priority. You’ll kick that stress to the curb, look and feel your best, and have the energy to tackle any item on your never-ending to-do list.
Whether you’re looking to jumpstart your fitness routine or just keep up the current momentum, check out these 5 tips for staying active throughout the school year.
Create a Family Calendar
This is an absolute must-do if you want to rock this school year. It can be electronic, or it can be a good old-fashioned wall calendar. What matters is that it exists and that you’ll use it. Make sure to add all important school dates, after school activities, appointments, meetings, vacations, and anything else you’ve got going on. This will give you an idea of just how busy you’ll be this year.
Set Realistic Weekly Goals
After mapping out your year, make an honest assessment of how often you’ll be able to work out. Anywhere from 3 to 5 times a week is a good starting point. Keep in mind that not all workouts look the same. You don’t always need to set aside a huge chunk of time for hitting the gym. An after dinner walk, or an at-home HIIT workout are great options too!
Prepare for Setbacks
If your calendar doesn’t constantly change, you’re one of the lucky few. The rest of us have to wing it from time to time. One of the best ways to prepare for busy days is to keep a few quick and efficient workouts in your back pocket. Even something as simple as completing 10 squats, 10 push ups, and 10 sit ups for as many rounds as you can in 10 minutes can make a total difference in your day.
Have Happy Hour at the Gym
If you’ve gotten into a happy hour routine this summer, just switch up your location. Instead of meeting your friends at the bar, meet at the gym. Protein shakes aren’t exactly as exciting as a glass of wine, but you’ll still have a great time. The key is to choose an activity where you can still socialize. Pro-tip: A quiet yoga session may not be your best bet.
Get Up and Get Creative
There really are only 24 hours in the day, and you should be sleeping for some of them. If you have maxed out your waking hours and workouts are few and far between, think outside of the box. Get your work done at a standing or treadmill desk, meet with your coworker while walking laps, or let the baby nap while you take a stroll through the neighborhood. Multi-tasking will quickly become second nature, and your body will thank you.
