Staying hydrated helps every system in your body work at its best, from your brain to your digestive system to your metabolism. It can also help stave off energy-zapping woes like headaches and constipation for some people. In other words, staying hydrated is a good idea. While the typical “8 glasses a day” recommendation is a good place to start, we recommend that you use the color of your urine as a guide. If it’s clear or pale yellow, like lemonade, you’re hydrated. If it’s darker like apple juice, you need to drink up.
So many of our clients aren’t drinking enough water when they step into our office. In order to help increase their water intake, in ways that they’ll be able to sustain, we use the following ideas:
There’s an App for That: The latest hydration apps will remind you when it’s time to have a drink and also keep track of how much water you’ve sipped throughout the day. And we can tell you by experience that once you use one of these apps, you’ll realize how little you were drinking before. Apps we love: Water Your Body and iDrated.
There’s a Bottle for That: If you can’t remember if you filled your water bottle up two or three times before the afternoon, then you might benefit from the Sportline HydraCoach Intelligent Water Bottle. This fancy water bottle keeps tabs on how much you’ve had to drink from it each day. An added bonus, especially timely for Earth Day, is that using this water bottle (and other reusables) also helps save loads of plastic from hitting the landfills.
Add Some Pizzazz: If you just can’t jump on the plain water train, there are so many options to make hydrating a little tastier. One of our favorites is adding sliced cucumber and lemon to water to create “spa water”. You can also add fresh or frozen fruit and herbs. A few great combinations are raspberry-lime, strawberry-lemon-mint, and watermelon-rosemary. The Clean Bottle Square has a built-in basket for fruit as well as a built-in filter, so you just fill it with fruit and then refill with water throughout the day for a constant supply of freshly filtered flavored water. And just like the bottle above, using this reusable bottle helps to minimize the amount of plastic bottles you throw out. If you like your drinks cold, try these flavored ice cube ideas that you can add to still or sparkling water. And speaking of sparkling water, it definitely counts towards your daily water intake!
