If you want to get healthier or into better shape, but haven’t worked out in years, you don’t need to hit the gym immediately. You can start by just being a little more active to build up some stamina to get to the gym. In fact, just reducing the amount of time you are sitting can have positive effects on your body: reducing body weight, lowering the risk for diabetes, and more. Here are a few simple tips to get some light physical activity to start being more active.
Start Taking the Stairs
If you usually take an elevator or escalator, opt to take the stairs instead. This sounds really easy, but that bit of walking up the stairs can be a great way to get the blood flowing. If you have to go a long way, try walking up as many flights as possible, and then take the elevator the rest of the way.
Park Far Away
Whenever you drive somewhere and need to park, such as going to work or going to the mall, don’t just park near the door; instead park at the back of the parking lot and walk to the front door. By parking far away, this forces you to walk father each day, and can help you build up your stamina.
Ditch the Car
Instead of driving somewhere, consider walking or biking. And if you need to go far, consider walking to public transportation and taking it. By not using your car, you will inevitably need to walk more, which is good for your health. Worried about making alterations to your schedule? Do it on the weekend when you aren’t crunched for time.
Stand at Your Desk
Finally, instead of sitting at your desk every day, consider standing for periods of time. Forcing yourself to stand while working is even healthier for your body than sitting for long periods of time. Some offices will even install standing desks for employees, which can adjust between sitting and standing positions. Check and see if your company offers this.
So let’s hear it… what are you going to do to start being more active?
