We love asking people if they like sardines because the answers are about as polarizing as asking people if they like cilantro! Personally, we LOVE sardines and feel like most people who fall into this category understand just how versatile these little fish are. For the folks who might still think they aren’t fans (and for the ones who already are!), we’ve put together some of our favorite ways to enjoy this delicious, nutritious fish… we think they might just pleasantly surprise you!
1. On avocado toast
Adding some protein to a slice of avocado toast transforms it from a snack into a completely balanced meal. The flavor and texture of sardines pairs really well with avocado toast and we especially like it with a splash of hot sauce on top. To create your own, toast a slice of bread and drizzle with a small amount of olive oil. Mash 1/4-1/2 of an avocado (depending on how much you love it), and spread on top of the toast. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Top with 2 oil-packed sardines, broken into pieces, and a splash of your favorite hot sauce.
2. In a grilled cheese
This is such a classic sandwich and it pairs perfectly with a salad or tomato soup for an added boost of veggies. The main thing missing? Protein! We love dicing up some sardines and adding them to the sandwich along with the cheese and a slice of tomato. As the cheese melts and the bread toasts, the flavors really meld and create a flavorful, protein-rich version of a favorite classic.
3. In a grain bowl
Grain bowls have become popular on Instagram as well as in IRL, and we aren’t complaining. If you’re not familiar with the bowls, they have a base of whole grains that’s topped with raw and/or roasted veggies, some type of protein, and dressing. The types of grains, veggies, protein, and dressing used are only limited by the imagination! We love using sardines as the protein in our bowls. A great combo we’ve found is farro, roasted carrots, finely chopped raw kale, oil-packed sardines, and lemon-basil (or pesto!) dressing.
4. On a chickpea salad
Canned chickpeas are a pantry staple in both of our kitchens and one of our favorite super-fast and totally balanced lunches/dinners is to toss together a chickpea, kale, and red onion salad, and top it with sardines. We usually rinse and drain a can of chickpeas and toss it with a few cups of finely chopped kale and some thinly sliced purple onion (pickled onion is delish in this, too). Then, we drizzle the whole salad with lemon juice, olive oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper, and top with pieces of Bumble Bee® Sardines In Olive Oil. .
