What is Your Favorite Part about Lifting?

I love the strength and confidence I have developed through lifting weights. I am convinced that building muscle is directly tied to confidence. Navigating the gym with ease makes you look at life differently, which is why it is so important for women to get past their fear of getting too bulky. There are tremendous physical and mental health benefits to developing strength and improving conditioning.

How Did you Get Started?

I began working out seriously after a very severe car accident. I had never been an athlete and was incredibly weak for a woman in her early 30s. The chiropractor I began seeing after the accident urged me to learn how to lift weights. I bought myself a pair of leggings at Target, got a gym membership and bought a package with a trainer. I never looked back!

How Long Have You Been Lifting?

It’s been a little over 6 years.

What is Your Favorite Type of Exercise and Why?

I love traditional weight training exercises like a barbell squat or deadlift.

What is Your Best Training Tip?

I am currently sharing a series on my blog called Build Your Moves. It shares training tips weekly through breaking down one exercise through muscle activation and form cues with easy tweaks to increase the challenge and work different angles. My best overall training advice is to take the time to really understand a movement. If you are not feeling an exercise you need to find out why before you go further. Plus, like anything else, consistency is really crucial.

What Keeps You Motivated?

When I don’t work out I feel like something is missing. It’s such a big part of my routine in my life now. Feeling strong keeps me going on those days when I am tired or unmotivated.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Who is Just Starting on His or Her Fitness Journey?

It may sound cliché, but just start! The pieces will come together over time. Keep showing up, be patient and always be open to learning. The results will come from that hard work.
