Bumble Bee Foods Environmental Footprint Metrics

Bumble Bee made solid progress against all 4 reduction goals in 2011 although reductions in energy, GHG and water were not as strong as 2010 performance vs. the 2009 baseline.  This was largely driven by overall lower production output in 2011.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Energy Usage

Bumble Bee Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas emissions and energy usage decreased by 19% in 2011 from the 2009 baseline.  GHG emissions and energy usage per production output decreased by 5% over the same period as a result of operational consolidation and energy efficiency measures at our plants.

Water Usage

Bumble Bee water usage decreased 27% in 2011 from the 2009 baseline.  Water usage per production output decreased 14% as a result of operational consolidation and water efficiency initiatives.

Waste Generation

Bumble Bee waste sent to landfill decreased by 27% in 2011 from our 2009 baseline.  Waste to landfill per production output decreased by 14%.  The main driver of 2011 improvement is a result of a test program where waste from one plant previously sent to landfill is being used as a source for conversion to biofuel.

Overall, waste send to landfill respresents about 10% of our total waste stream.  Byproducts from our plants being used in fishmeal and bait products represent a significant percentage of total waste along with recycling and compost.
