Simple Tips to Help Break Bad
Workout Habits

Your intentions are good every time you lace-up your athletic shoes to hit the gym or go for a walk or run, but your efforts at a healthy and active lifestyle may be thwarted by bad workout habits you may not even realize. Check out these four easy tips from BeeWell for Life fitness expert Jennifer Edwards to help break bad workout habits and get healthier this holiday season.

  1. Not Eating Enough
That's right, you read it correctly. A healthy, balanced diet is of utmost importance to your overall health. After all, food is the fuel that powers your workout, and many of us make the mistake of not eating enough to power our workouts.
Solution: In addition to regular meals, have a light snack an hour before your workout. Try a banana or granola bar. Also grab a snack within the first hour or two after your workout. Good choices include yogurt with fruit or a good, old fashioned PB&J. And donít forget to stay hydrated! Not drinking enough water can cause you to be more tired, have less coordination and suffer from muscle cramps.

  2. Skipping Your Warm-Up
Many of us are guilty of not warming up before working out, whether it's because we are crunched for time or we simply think we don't need it, but think again! Warming up boosts your body temperature, enabling blood to flow and breathing to increase during your workout; and, in turn, it can actually help you achieve a better workout.
Solution: Make time for an additional five to ten minutes of stretching or engaging in a light aerobic warm-up to maximize your workout.

  3. Not Focusing on Your Form
Our moms always told us, "Donít slouch, sit up straight." Well, they were right, and the same good form should be applied to workouts. Form naturally deteriorates over time due to age, lack of attention and previous injuries, but it is also easily corrected once you are aware of it. Proper form will help to make the most of any workout.
Solution: Look ahead 10-20 feet when you walk, making sure to take measured steps. Be sure to stretch your spine as you travel so your shoulders are level. Bend your arms at a 90-degree angle and let them swing at your waist.

  4. Overtraining
Overtraining can have a negative effect on workouts. It takes away the body's natural ability to recover, and can result in loss of strength and fitness, consistent soreness and could even increase chance of injury.
Solution: Embrace breaks. Take a day off here and there. Help your body recover by feeding it with sleep. At the gym, try training different muscles on different days. Make sure your training plan includes down time to allow your body to recuperate. This time actually helps your body to build muscle to increase your strength and builds your endurance.
