2011: The Year to Bee—Note from Chris Lischewski, Our CEO
CEOGreetings to all of our Bee-Mail subscribers and Bumble Bee fans—I hope 2011 is already off to a terrific start for everyone!

Over time, I've read with a lot of interest and appreciation all of your enthusiasm for Bumble Bee. My team and I are thankful for the time you spend with us and are delighted that you continue to enjoy our Bumble Bee products!

As we look to 2011, I can tell you that I'm very excited. Last year we were involved in various important initiatives that allowed us to engage more with our consumers and advocate our mission regarding health and wellness, nutrition and exercise, and corporate social responsibility. This included our active participation in the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), linking arms with the food and beverage industry as well as a number of partners in non-profit, nutrition, physical wellness and other sectors. Together, we are working on delivering measurable programs that will help combat childhood obesity by 2015. In 2011, we will continue to support HWCF's mission as part of the foundation and through our own brand efforts.

Our signature BeeWell for Life program, designed to support consumers in accomplishing an active and healthful lifestyle, continues to grow strong! And 2010 saw the achievement of our sodium reduction goals on our tuna products effectively removing over 150 tons of salt per year. In 2011 we will continue to make significant sodium cuts across the rest of product portfolio. More good health news!

As focused as we are on advocating good nutrition through our products, we also take very seriously our role as an organization in the management and stewardship of fisheries resources using a science-based approach to sustainability. Having had an active role in this important area over many years, in 2010, we saw the first anniversary of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), an organization of which we are a proud founder. The ISSF is a global partnership among leaders in science, the tuna industry and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world's leading conservation organization. Together, we're committed to effectively managing ocean resources for generations to come.

I'm pleased to confirm that our Bee Squad is back with mom and dad blogger ambassadors offering their tips and insights — discussing such topics as recipes and meals, grocery and value shopping, nutrition, and raising a healthy family. In fact, I'm looking forward to seeing the Bee Squad in August in our hometown of San Diego where the annual BlogHer conference is being hosted for the very first time.

As you can tell, we have a packed year ahead! And it's exciting.

Thank you for being a fan of Bumble Bee and have a fantastic 2011.

— Chris Lischewski

February is American Heart Month
According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Statistics show that every 25 seconds an American will have a coronary event, and every minute someone in the United States will die from one. The heart is the universal symbol for love and as the month of February ignites thoughts and images of love, let's takes the necessary steps to make sure you and your loved ones make heart health a priority this month, and every month. A healthy diet and lifestyle are your greatest allies to fight heart disease. The Center for Disease Control recommends basing your eating patterns on these easy tips:
  1. Choose and prepare foods with little or no salt. Aim to eat less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day.
  2. Cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol. Aim to eat less than 300 mg of cholesterol each day.
  3. Choose lean meats and poultry without skin and prepare them without added saturated and trans fats.
  4. Cut back on foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to reduce trans fats in your diet.
  5. Keep an eye on your portion sizes. Click here for more information on suggested servings from the American Heart Association.

Grab A Buddy and Raise Your Heart Rate
Working out with a partner is a lot more fun than going at it alone, so this month, grab your Valentine—whether it is a friend, family member or significant other—and follow these buddy workout tips from Coach Jenny.
  • Plan a hiking trip. If you live in a sunny part of the US, get out the map and get some fresh air. You can check out LocalHikes.com to find the perfect trail for you and your partner.
  • Weather bad in your area? Meet your buddy at the gym and schedule to run or walk on the treadmill next to each other so you can still chat. Or walk the mall if you don't have access to a gym—there is plenty of space to get in a quick hour of walking in most malls. Then, enjoy a movie after the walk as a special treat!
  • Be sure to log your miles at www.beewellforlife.com to make them matter! For every mile you and your group/partner log, we will donate $0.10/mile to Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization (formerly Breast Cancer Network of Strength) to help those touched by breast cancer NOW.
  • Schedule an early morning run or walk. Meet at your favorite local spot, get in your workout together and share a light healthy breakfast or cup of Joe afterward.
  • Set specific dates and times to meet up with your group or buddy. That way, you'll have a commitment beyond this week. Stay motivated by sharing your goals with each other and keeping a log. Then, celebrate your successful milestones with a massage or movie date. And remember, you're 100 times more likely to get up, get out and get active if you have a buddy to meet. Not to mention, the time will fly by when you're chatting and you get the added bonus of some healthy social time too.
