>Fresh Fixings with Bumble Bee
Spring has sprung! And along with warmer weather, the season also brings a bevy of wonderful fruits and vegetables to spruce up your everyday meals! While you can go to the produce section of your local grocery store to pick up your favorites, a fun family alternative is attending your local farmer’s market. Farmer’s markets are a great option because they give you an opportunity to learn about and even try many of the items. Plus, the fruits and vegetables are fresh and you are supporting your local farmers and growers. Not to mention it gets you outside to enjoy a little walking, fresh air and sunshine!
"Farmer’s market shopping is not only the best way to find the season’s best availability, it is affordable and gives you a direct connection to the source, the farmer," says Chef Scott.
- Although shopping at a farmer’s market has the first of the season’s availability, fruits and vegetables need time to mature. Check with the farmer on what is ripe and ready.
- Once you choose your fruits and/or vegetables, ask for basic cooking ideas, the farmers are typically more than willing to share their ideas.
- Growing in popularity, finding a farmer’s market in your area is easier than you would think. To find a farmer’s market in your neighborhood, visit the USDA’s Farmers Market Search or LocalHarvest.org.

A Billion Acts of Green
Friday, April 22 marks Earth Day and the theme for 2011 is “A Billion Acts of Green.” The service campaign is the largest in the world and the goal is to register one billion “Acts of Green” before the Earth Summit in June 2012. Need some help thinking of some fun and simple acts you can do with your family? Here are some ways you can help and add to the “A Billion Acts of Green” goal:
- Plan a neighborhood clean-up. It’s a great way to get people of all ages involved, plus you can get to know your neighbors while beautifying where you live!
- Plant a tree or a garden in your yard.
- Change out your light bulbs to energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. They consume about 75 percent less electricity and last up to 10 times longer.
- Turn off the lights! We are all guilty of leaving a room and forgetting to flip the switch, but try to make a habit of remembering to turn off the lights.
- And that goes for the water, too! Remember to turn it off while you are brushing your teeth or washing your face.
For more ideas of how you can help or to register your “Acts of Green” visit EarthDay.org.
Bumble Bee’s "Acts of Green"
“Acts of Green” aren’t just for the individual, but for companies as well, and at the core of Bumble Bee’s strategic company plan is corporate responsibility. Here’s what we are doing:
- Sustaining Fisheries - This is important for the environment, for consumers and for business. Bumble Bee is proud to be a founder of the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), a global partnership among leaders in science, the tuna industry and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization. The ISSF’s mission is to undertake science-based initiatives for the long-term sustainability of tuna stocks, reduce by-catch and promote ecosystem health, largely by supporting the conservation recommendations of tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMO) scientific committees.
- Reducing our Environmental Footprint - Bumble Bee is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations. By 2015, we plan to reduce energy and greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent, water use by 20 percent and waste we put into landfills by 15 percent. Ongoing efforts and projects include lighting retrofits, boiler efficiency improvements, high efficiency air compressor installation, water reuse/conservation projects, energy efficient roof installations, and expanded recycling programs.
- Recyclable Packaging - Bumble Bee’s objective is to design and source primary and secondary packaging that has a minimal environmental impact while ensuring the safety and quality of our products. The majority of Bumble Bee’s products are packaged in steel cans, aluminum containers, paperboard cartons and glass bottles—all recyclable materials!
- Engaging Our Employees - A long term goal for Bumble Bee is to integrate our sustainability practices into our day-to-day business. We recently introduced an individual sustainability awareness program, which not only highlights sustainability initiatives in the workplace but also educates our employees about our corporate sustainability efforts and daily practices. In our offices, we initiated dual-side printing to reduce paper consumption, implemented more robust office recycling programs and installed filtered water system at our corporate headquarters to avoid the need for bottled water.
