Incredible Athlete Series: Theodora Blanchfield

Incredible Athlete Series: Theodora Blanchfield

Three years ago, Theodora Blanchfield decided she needed a change. She had just moved to NYC and was asked to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding on the beach in Aruba. Overweight and unhappy, she knew she needed a change and set out to lose 50 pounds, blogging about her journey as she went. She quickly was bit by the running bug, and signed up for her first 5K, then 10-miler, which eventually led to half-marathons (she’s run 11) and full marathons (she’s run 2 and just signed up for her third–Marine Corps, where she hopes to break 4 hours!).

What is your favorite part about running? I love that I can only get better. I love pushing myself to train harder and then watching myself get faster. I took off 40 minutes between my first and second marathon! Crossing the finish line knowing that months of hard work paid off is more rewarding than anything I’ve ever felt–and that confidence finds its way into other parts of my life, as well.

How many races have you completed? 34! six 5Ks; one 8K; four 4M; five 10Ks; two 15Ks; ten half-marathons; two 10 M; one 18M, two full marathons and one sprint tri!

What advice would you give someone interested in participating in his/her first race? Sign up, and sign up with friends who will also actually do it! Before I got serious about running, I signed up for so many races that I didn’t do. But if you sign up for a race, and sign up with a friend who will do it with you–or just be there–you’ll be more likely to do it.

What is your best training tip? Consistency. The closer you stick to a training plan, the better you do. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I hit about 95% of my planned runs for the NYC Marathon this year and improved my time 40 minutes–I probably only got in 75% of my runs for my first marathon.

What keeps you motivated? Improving my times! Having a goal time in mind–and I always do–motivates me to keep running and trying.
