Incredible Athlete Series: Carissa Bealert

Carissa BealertCarissa and her husband are both certified personal trainers with a passion for healthy, active living and clean eating, and they both blog at Fit2Flex.  Carissa is a race announcer, runner, FitFluential ambassador, and is studying to become a registered dietitian, making her the perfect fit for our Incredible Athlete series.

What is your favorite part about running? My favorite part of running is the pride you get after finishing a long or tough run. It’s not a job, it’s not an obligation, and nobody made you do it. You pushed yourself and nothing beats that feeling of accomplishment! It’s like, “It’s 7 a.m. and I just ran 10 miles…what did YOU do?” :)

How many races have you completed? I have completed five half marathons and one full marathon.  I have another half on March 4 the Gasparilla Half Marathon in Tampa.  I have announced over 100 races and I am currently one of the RunDisney race announcers.

What advice would you give someone interested in participating in his/her first race? My advice for someone in his/her first race is to enjoy it! Nothing beats the minute that you take off with thousands of other runners and realize how awesome it is! Practical advice would be to do a test run in the exact outfit you plan to wear on race day and also don’t drink a lot of the Gatorade/sports drink at the aid stations unless your body is used to training with it.

What is your best training tip? My best training tip is the Jeff Galloway Run-Walk-Run strategy. It actually helps me go faster on long runs and recover faster. You alternate a prescribed time of running with a short walk break from your first mile. It really helps when you are upping your distance or if you are a new runner.

What keeps you motivated? Races and getting faster is what keeps me motivated. Every run, every race is a chance to be a better version of who I was yesterday. Improvement keeps me motivated.

    My boyfriend ran his first half marathon last year and is planning to do the San Diego Rock & Roll Marathon this year. I’m trying to get into it too and find that I really need music to help me stay motivated on long runs.

    I can only do 3 miles right now and am trying to work my way up. I might just try the Run-Walk-Run strategy you mentioned and see how that works out. I’ll keep you posted!
