Spice Up Your Meals (DIY Spice Combos)

While we both love to cook, sometimes we get stuck in flavor ruts. In other words, the salt and pepper shaker get used on everything. And while we love letting the natural flavor of veggies and other foods shine, we also enjoy spicing things up (literally!) via more elaborate flavor combinations. On the other hand, we don’t love the high sodium levels or artificial additives that some pre-packaged spice mixes contain.

We’ve found that mixing up our own spice combinations allows us to add a quick flavor burst to veggies, fish, chicken, beef, tofu, etc. without the high sodium or artificial additives. These spice combos even work well in a simple vinegar and olive oil dressing, or marinade. We also love sprinkling these mixes over freshly popped popcorn (especially the taco seasoning!) to add a flavor kick. Here are our three favorite basics.

DIY Taco Seasoning

1/4 cup chile powder

2 tablespoons ground cumin

1 tablespoon granulated garlic

2 teaspoons smoked paprika

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 tablespoons sea salt

1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

Nutrition facts per teaspoon: 5 calories, 224mg sodium

 

BBQ Rub

2 tablespoons smoked paprika

2 tablespoons paprika

2 tablespoons granulated garlic

1 1/2 tablespoons salt

1 1/2 tablespoons ground black pepper

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (more if you like it spicier)

1 tablespoon sea salt

2 tablespoons brown sugar

Nutrition facts per tablespoon: 25 calories, 306mg sodium

 

Garlic Ginger Mix

2 tablespoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

1/4 cup granulated garlic

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (more if you like it spicier)

1 tablespoon sea salt

Nutrition facts per teaspoon: 10 calories, 104mg sodium
