Fitness Craze Spotlight: Bikram Yoga

Some of us are still contemplating whether we should even attempt bending like a pretzel in public and others are looking for the next way in which they can challenge their fitness and flexibility. Whatever your level of fitness, there are ways in which to alter exercise routines to suit your capabilities.

This month we take a look at the Bikram Yoga craze, what it entails, and what it can do for your body.

What is Bikram?

Bikram was founded by Bikram Choudhury in 1946, who started practicing his technique at the tender age of four. After suffering from a knee injury doctors said he wouldn’t be able to walk, but yoga healed his body and in return he wanted to share this healing with the world.

Bikram Yoga consists of a series of posture and breathing exercises performed in a room heated to 104 degrees for about 90 minutes at a time. This demanding style of yoga includes 26 posture exercises with two breathing exercise.

How Does it Work?

Why should it be hot, you may wonder? Not only does the heat help for getting a deeper and safer stretch but it aids in detoxing the body as well. By performing these exercises targeted at the entire body, from your bones to your skin, it rids your body of all toxins.

As mentioned before, though it can be rather demanding, yoga is something that can be practiced at any fitness level. It’s about personal progress and challenging your body. As the Bikram saying goes:

“It’s never too late, it’s never too bad, you’re never too old, you’re never too sick to start from scratch once again, to be born once again”. –  Bikram Yoga

What to Expect:

You will be sweating from every single sweat gland on your body, so don’t be surprised when you find yourself instantly soaked. At first the heat might be a bit much, but if you stay hydrated you will get used to the feeling no time. Listen to your body and its limits, and don’t try to be on par with everyone else. This is a personal journey. Sit down if you need to and talk to the instructor in advance about what to do if it gets to be too much for you, as some do not recommend leaving the room but rather laying down.

What are the Benefits?

Bikram Yoga is wonderful for your mind and body. It releases tension and stress; aids with strengthening and toning muscles; promotes balance and blood circulation; limits the effects of aging; and helps the body restore its natural health.
