Fitness Planning For Next Year

Bee ActiveIn many ways, it feels like 2014 only just started and yet 2015 is quickly approaching. December is one of my favorite months. Aside from the holidays, I’m one of those people who loves planning. Nothing rings more true to me than “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” While you may be busy planning your 2015 goals, it’s also important to decide on your fitness plan for 2015. Here are a few things to consider:

What’s Up, Doc?
A crucial step to take when planning your fitness routine for the coming year is to pay a visit to your doctor. Start the year on the right foot by going for a general check-up. Tell your doctor about your fitness plans and discuss which exercises to steer clear of, should you have any limitations.

Going for a general check-up is a form of preventing injury and establishing what you can and cannot attempt. It’s like the stamp of approval for your fitness planning for the year.

Assess Your Fitness
The most important thing to keep in mind when starting your fitness regime in January is that you won’t be an expert by March. Progress takes time and will vary according to your fitness levels. You could either do a simple fitness test to see where you fall, or ask a trainer at the gym to assess your vitals.

Be Realistic
Remember to be good to your body. Understand that it is going to take time and that there are certain limitations. Don’t push yourself too hard as this might lead to unnecessary injuries, which will only delay your progress.

Sometimes, pushing yourself too hard and ultimately not reaching your goals may lead you to quit instead of endure. Be realistic about what you can achieve while still setting up challenges to reach.

Choose Your Workouts
While doing your fitness planning for the coming year, choose certain exercises or classes that you would like to master. When starting out, stick to what you know. If you don’t like running, start out with 30 minutes on the bicycle, or attend a Zumba class. It’s about choosing what will make you happy as well as keep you fit.

Don’t try to do too much at first, test out a few classes and workouts. Another alternative is to invest in a personal trainer that will be able to work out a plan especially for you and your goals.

Set Monthly Goals
Set monthly goals to keep you motivated and inspired. These don’t need to be too specific, but they should be challenges that you want to meet. If you are looking to lose weight, you could set monthly goal weights. If you want to up your running fitness levels, you could enter a local 5K, 10K or half-marathon after two to three months, etc.

Find A Partner
Accountability is something that can really push you to reach your goals. Find someone on a similar fitness level with relatable goals and keep each other in the loop. It works even better if the person is your dedicated workout buddy.
