If you’re traveling, whether for work or to visit family this holiday season, it can be difficult to maintain an exercise routine. However, it doesn’t have to be impossible, and most hotels make it easy to work out if you come prepared. Here are some tips on maintaining a fitness routine while you’re on the road.
The first step to staying in shape while traveling is being prepared. This means packing workout clothes so you don’t have an excuse for not working out (including your running shoes). Also, you could even pack light exercise equipment to bring with you: a jump rope or resistance bands.
If you’re staying at a hotel, many have a pool that is conducive to swimming laps. This can be a great way to mix up your regular routine while still getting in some great cardio exercises.
Finally, don’t forget to bring your iPod and headphones so you can listen to music while you work out. You could even download a workout video to your iPod and watch it in your hotel or at your family’s house to give you ideas.
This is simple, but consider walking everywhere, especially if you’re on vacation. Don’t take a cab or shuttle if you can walk. Just plan out your trip in advance to give yourself enough time to get to your destination. If you’re traveling by train, consider walking the cars to keep moving.
Book Active Sightseeing Adventures
Finally, if you’re on vacation, consider booking active sightseeing adventures to stay in shape. Many people book warm destinations during the winter – like Hawaii or the Caribbean. In these places, consider activities like parasailing, snorkeling, surfing, or hiking. You could also do activities that you’ve never done before, like scuba diving or kayaking.
Most of these destinations have tour companies that can guide you and train you, so you can still have an active trip, but you don’t need to be an expert before you get there.
