What you eat influences your every move—and for runners this is no exception. Over the years I’ve met quite a few runners who eat whatever they want thinking that because they are running, they’re making up for it. But I’m not just talking calories or weight gain here. You can’t expect to run your best times when you have been following an unhealthy eating regimen. The key is to feed your body the nutrients it needs to perform at its optimum ability.
When it comes to running, some foods can be seen as power foods to aid in your stride and help you obtain peak performance. Here are what I consider to be the 5 best foods for runners:
It doesn’t matter if they’re hard-boiled, fried or scrambled, add this protein-rich food into your diet. Eggs are known as the most complete food protein apart from breast milk. They will give you the energy you need as well as help with muscle recovery.
Soups are the ideal post-workout food, because they are low in calories but high in energy and will keep you full longer. Opt for broth-based soups made with healthy greens and proteins, and avoid higher fat cream-based soups.
Your body needs healthy fats for healthy, functioning heart muscle. These omega-3 essential fatty acids can be found in salmon. As a runner, you should try to incorporate seafood into your diet at least two to three times a week.
Bananas are the perfect fruit for that much-needed energy before a race. Bananas are almost entirely made up of carbohydrates. This will give any runner that added boost while being a fruit that is easy to consume and digest.
In recent years, sweet potatoes have become the potato of choice! From fries, to chips, to steamed sides, you’ll see these bright vegetables on almost any menu you open. Even though regular potatoes have their benefits, sweet potatoes are high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium and iron as well as being an antioxidant, making them the preferred option. Some runners might need extra magnesium and copper in their diets and sweet potatoes are a great source.
These are just a few of the super-foods that are beneficial to runners and to overall exercise. Try to include at least one or two of these foods in your diet daily. And don’t forget to stay hydrated!
