4 Tips for Successfully Achieving New Years Resolutions

We’re officially a few weeks into the New Year, and I’m sure by now, you’re sick of the gym being packed, the organic section of the grocery store being scarce, and all of those cranky newly ex-smokers!

According to StatisticBrain.com, 62% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, but only about 8% are actually successful in achieving those goals.  While it is easy to stay motivated while your resolutions are fresh on the brain, here are four tips to ensure you fall in that 8% of people who succeed.

Make it Visual

Whether you get crafty and create a vision board for yourself, create a desktop background that reminds you of your goals, or just hang your list on the wall – it’s important that you are able to see your list daily. We’ve all experienced the oh-so famous “out of sight, out of mind” effect.

Schedule Quarterly Reviews

Being the Type-A, detail-oriented, crazed person that I am, I like to break my resolutions into mini-goals for myself so that I can check into where I stand on a quarterly basis. For example, if you have a goal of losing 60lbs this year, you need to lose 5lbs per month. So by the end of March, your first quarterly check-in, you should be down 15lbs to be on track.

Tell People

Let other people know what your goals are, and ask them to help keep you accountable. Want to read 50 books this year? Ask close friends or family members to check in with you periodically to find out where you stand with that. When you know people are expecting you to reach your goal, you’re more likely to stay on track and hold yourself accountable as well.

Reward Yourself

The inner child in us all wants to be rewarded for our positive behavior. What will you do for yourself if you achieve your goals? Whether it is something elaborate (and perhaps, more enticing) like a vacation, or treating yourself to a new bathing suit to show off that new body, keeping the reward in mind can be that extra motivation you need to not give up.

Remember — you set those goals because you want to achieve something. This isn’t a chore, but rather, an opportunity to prove to yourself that you can get what you want and you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Now, let’s commit to each other right now that we will succeed. What will you achieve this year?
